Biography

Margerene Wilcots moved with her family to Hanford when she was in the first grade. It was 1937.

Wilcots and her siblings grew up in a racially diverse area of town during a time when racial minorities had limited housing options and few employment opportunities. She was among the first generation of Black females to pursue higher education at College of the Sequoias—an accomplishment she parlayed into a successful 38-year career with the Kings County Welfare Department.

Wilcots still resides in Hanford. The mother of three daughters, she has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
